Senior Leadership Team
Dean, University Library - Melissa Just

As Dean, Melissa is responsible for the strategic direction and general operations of the University Library, ensuring its continued contribution to the university’s goals, mission, vision, and values. She leads a team of 150 faculty and staff in seven libraries, University Archives & Special Collections, and Student Learning Services. 

Melissa joined the Library as Dean on February 1, 2017. She previously served as associate vice-president for information services, and director of New Brunswick Libraries, at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J, and held a variety of leadership roles in academic health sciences libraries in California. She earned an EdD from the University of Southern California, a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Texas, and a BA in psychobiology from the University of California, Riverside.

She represents the University of Saskatchewan as a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL), and the Council of Prairie and Pacific Libraries (COPPUL).

Associate Dean - Charlene Sorensen

Charlene Sorensen joined the University Library in 2006 and has undertaken a variety of roles, including Serials Coordinator, Head of Description and Discovery, Associate Dean, and one year as Interim Dean. As Associate Dean she oversees Collection Services, University Archives & Special Collections, and Library Systems & Information Technology. Her previous library experience includes work with Health Canada and the NRC-Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (now the National Science Library). Charlene is a Distinguished Graduate of the University of Saskatchewan (B.A. Honours) and received her Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Western Ontario. Within the discipline of academic librarianship, her research interests include change management, leadership development, and sound serials management practices.

Director, Financial & Physical Resources - Dale Amerud

Dale joined the University Library as Director in 2011 to provide leadership, direction and expertise to promote and enhance fiscal leadership. This includes responsibility for long-term financial strategy, including the management of policies, systems and processes. The Director provides expertise to the Library’s senior leadership about space design and allocation, including major capital projects and refurbishments. Dale is responsible for ensuring processes and procedures are in place and risks are mitigated to ensure the safety and security of employees, visitors, collections and facilities. Dale also has overall accountability for the administrative service operations of the Dean’s Office.

Before joining the University of Saskatchewan in 1997, Dale was the Assistant Director of Finance for LutherCare Communities of Saskatoon. Dale received his Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1985 and his Master of Business Administration degree in 1991, both from the U of S. Dale became a Charted Professional Accountant in 2004.

Associate Dean - Rachel Sarjeant-Jenkins (on administrative leave)

Rachel started at the University Library as Assistant Dean (Client Services) in the fall of 2010 to lead the planning, coordination and development of services to library clients delivered through the seven branch libraries. Working in close collaboration with the branch heads, Rachel focuses on the client experience – customer service and library marketing, library instruction and education, and the library as a physical and virtual space; she believes strongly in the role of the University Library in supporting and advancing the learning, teaching and research of the students, faculty and staff at the University of Saskatchewan.

Rachel was the Chief Librarian of the Medicine Hat Public Library from 1999-2010; prior to that she was librarian for the Centre for the Study of Co-operatives and head of a public library in England. She has been actively involved on provincial and national committees and believes in the strength of libraries when they work as a community with a consistent message.
